An expanded Sterile Processing Space for the Kansas City VA
With a redesign and renovation in need for the Sterile Processing Services (SPS) area at the Kansas City VA Medical Center, our team’s focus was transformation and functionality. The result? A modern, efficient, and secure space that boosts operational capabilities.
Client
Kansas City VA Medical Center
Location
Kansas City, MO
Project Size
15,000 SF (including 3,000 SF ICU renovation)
Challenge
Our challenge was to reconfigure and expand the sterile processing space within a tight footprint while ensuring the ICU remained fully operational. This required integrating 15,000 square feet of SPS upgrades, including adding storage, a water treatment room, and separating clean/dirty cart storage. We also had to meet the latest VA HVAC standards, upgrade utilities, and address FCA deficiencies — all while keeping the hospital running smoothly.
Solution
We overhauled the space with a comprehensive approach, from mechanical and plumbing systems to fire protection and security upgrades. The HVAC system was replaced to meet the latest VA guidelines, while electrical and lighting systems were upgraded for efficiency. Fire protection was enhanced with a new wet-pipe sprinkler system, and security was revamped with modern access control and surveillance. All systems were designed for seamless integration with existing infrastructure.
Result
This SPS expansion creates a more efficient, secure, and functional environment for sterilization and infection control operations. With updated systems, better security, and a fully compliant layout, this facility will meet the VA’s highest standards. By phasing construction and keeping disruption to a minimum, we ensured the hospital’s daily operations continued without a hitch — delivering a top-tier facility on time and within budget.
